The town of Amalfi, with its storied past, awaits eager explorers, inviting them to step back in time. The town's namesake, "Di Amalfi," echoes the glory of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, an influential medieval sea power and important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 to around 1200. The historic grandeur is palpable as you stroll through its maze of narrow streets, discovering hidden gems of local craftsmanship and savoring the vibrant charm of lively markets.
La Cucina “al limone” - an unmissable treat
The enduring sparkle stretches far beyond the Amalfi Coast proper. To the right of Amalfi, the Sorrento Peninsula is equally as gorgeous but perhaps not quite as well known as Amalfi. And those who say Sorrento say … lemons! This is the region where lemons reign supreme in the kitchen, adding bursts of vibrant flavor to the local, zesty cuisine. From the famous limoncello served in everything from Spritzs to supper to citrus-infused seafood delicacies, lemons are a true taste of the region. Local chefs skillfully incorporate these local treasures into every aspect of their culinary creations, crafting a symphony of taste that reflects the area's abundant charm and refreshing Mediterranean spirit.
Embracing la Dolce Vita: Time to Explore
If there is one region in Italy where you can really embrace la dolce vita it’s Amalfi. Italians are great believers in la dolce farniente - the sweet joy of doing nothing - and are all about embracing the present moment. So make like a local and melt into that sunset, drink in that sea view, and enjoy that plate of pasta with gusto.
Even if time here takes on a different rhythm, there is still plenty to see and do. The Amalfi Coast is a treasure trove of picturesque towns, each offering its unique charms. Our favorite way of exploring the Sorrento coast is by vintage car, renting the ubiquitous Cinquecento (aka Fiat 500), and meandering through the region’s charming neighboring coastal towns. Enjoy endless opportunities to explore, from shady piazzas to hidden coves to lemon groves. Or why not head into the mountains and discover delicious delights such as freshly made cheese and locally made wine. Amalfi and its surrounding villages are perfect for slowing down life’s usually hectic pace and immersing yourself in the magic of each moment.
Pompeii
Surely one of the region’s most famous sites (and sights) is the excavations of Pompeii. Located just one hour from Sorrento, the haunting UNESCO World Heritage Site serves as a stark reminder of how the cataclysmic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD changed everything in this region of Campania. The devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae, were buried under tons of volcanic pumice and ash, and the once-thriving ancient Roman city was tragically frozen in time.
The catastrophic event buried the city, preserving its streets, buildings, and inhabitants for nearly two millennia. Rediscovered in the 18th century, Pompeii has since offered unparalleled insights into daily Roman life, art, and architecture. Visitors can now wander through the remarkably well-preserved ruins, gazing upon frescoes, mosaics, and remnants of a civilization lost to history. Today, Pompeii stands as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage.
